Mexican steakhouse finds a familiar new home in downtown Los Angeles

Orange County celebrity chef Daniel Godinez is making new moves in Los Angeles proper, quietly opening a new outpost of his upscale Polanco Mexican Steakhouse restaurant at 840 S. Spring Street in the former Preux space. & Proper. The highly visible triangular building has been redone with the familiar Godinez touch, which means lots of cocktails, dim lighting and stuff served on wooden boards. Expect a menu that ranges from guacamole and ceviche to surf and turf platters and bone-in tomahawk ribeyes offered in the two-story space. A grand opening party is still a few weeks away, but the restaurant now serves customers Tuesday through Sunday, 5-10 p.m. (with a happy hour from 5-7 p.m.). Godinez and his partners already operate another Polanco Mexican Steakhouse outpost at 14400 Hindry Avenue in Hawthorne, not far from Manhattan Beach.

Some collaborations around the region

In Studio City, Jeff’s Table hosts a collaborative dinner with Oy Bar in the historic Oyster House at 12446 Moorpark Avenue. The evening on Thursday, April 7 will feature matzoh ball ramen, drinks and wine.

Meanwhile, local Los Angeles pop-up Malli is taking her Mexican-Jewish menu on the road for a collaboration with Priedite Barbecue at Bell’s in the small town of Los Alamos on the Central Coast. The unique event takes place on Saturday, April 9 a few hours north of Los Angeles and also includes conch and bagels from Estevan Silva and wine from Durham Cider + Wine. Be sure to arrive early.

Hotville Chicken is collaborating with Trejo’s Tacos throughout the month (well, starting April 7th anyway), with plans to sell Hot Chicken in taco, burrito, or bowl form at multiple Trejo’s Tacos locations. The limited-time dish will be available at Hollywood, La Brea and Santa Monica stores through April 30.
